A solution of (S)-benzyl 4-(3-amino-2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (2.0 g, 6.3 mmol), 1,2-difluoro-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzene (1.2 g, 6.3 mmol), and Na2CO3 (3.3 g, 32 mmol) in DMSO (20 mL) was stirred at 120° C. for 48 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water (200 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine and dried over MgSO4, filtered then concentrated in vacuo. The material was purified over silica gel (100% EtOAc) to yield (S)-benzyl 4-(3-(2-fluoro-4-(methylsulfonyl)phenylamino)-2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (1.3 g, 2.7 mmol, 42%).
