A mixture of 4-hydroxy-5-phenoxy-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (1.55 mmol, 458 mg), N-bromosuccinimide (1.7 mmol, 306 mg), benzoyl peroxide (0.08 mmol, 19 mg), and CCl4 (10 mL) was refluxed with stirring for 2 h. After cooling to ambient temperature the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel using hexanes:ethyl acetate=9:1 as the eluent to give the title compound as an off-white solid (225 mg); MS-(+)-ion: M+1, 79Br/81Br=373.9 and 375.8.
