The crude product from step (i) above was dissolved in ethanol (200 mL) and treated at room temperature with benzylamine (6.9 mL, 1 equiv.) in one portion (no exotherm was observed). The mixture was heated to reflux for 4 hours, and was then stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The solvent was removed in vacuo to give a viscous, colourless oil which was used in the subsequent step without further purification.
