Procedure
7-amino-2-(2-propoxyphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone (0.5 g) was heated under reflux in trimethylortho-formate (5 ml) for 22 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness, the residue dissolved in dry tetrahydrofuran and treated with sodium borohydride (0.3 g) and 4A molecular sieves for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between water and dichloromethane, the organic layer separated, dried (magnesium sulphate) and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from dichloromethane-diethyl ether to give 7-methylamino-2-(2-propoxyphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone 0.17 g, m.p. 204°-205° C.
