To a solution of 2-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)acetyl]-4-oxo-pyrazolidine-1-carboxylic acid benzyl ester, 4, (1 g, 4.5 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) is added Pd/C (100 mg). A balloon filled with hydrogen gas is placed over the flask and the mixture stirred for 3 hours. The solution is filtered to remove the catalyst and concentrated in vacuo to afford 0.8 g of the desired product as a yellow oil which is used without further purification.
