The above ester (0.38 g, 0.93 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (5 ml), 2 N sodium hydroxide (1.54 ml, 3.07 mmol) was added and the homogeneous mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. Water (15 ml) was added and the ethanol was removed in vacuo. The aqueous solution was washed with ether (2×10 ml) and pH was adjusted to 6 by addition of 1N hydrochloric acid. The acidic mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (2×15 ml). The combined organic extracts were washed with water (20 ml), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with ether and the product collected by filtration to give 0.23 g (66%) of the title compound as a powder.
