Procedure

Sodium methoxide (0.27 g) was added to a stirred solution of methyl 4-acetoxy-N-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylate (1.05 g) in methanol (15 ml) under an atmosphere of argon. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours, then concentrated in vacuo and the residue partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. Combined organic extracts were washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution and dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue purified by column chromatography using 45% diethyl ether: iso-hexane as eluent to give product as a white solid (0.83 g, 94%); NMR d (CD3SOCD3) 3.75 (s, 3H), 3.80 (s, 3H), 5.72 (s, 2H), 6.87-6.94 (m, 2H), 7.09 (d, 1H), 7.30 (s, 1H), 7.40 (s, 1H), 7.50 (d, 1H), 9.38 (s, 1H); M/z (+) 380 (MH+).
