tert-Butyl (10S)-10-methyl-9,10-dihydro-8H-imidazo[1′,2′:1,2]imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline-8-carboxylate (1.16 g, 3.58 mmol) was dissolved in 50 mL of CHCl3 and treated with MCPBA (1.05 g, 77% max). After 18 hours, the reaction was treated with 20 mL of 1% Na2CO3 solution and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with CHCl3 (6×20 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give tert-butyl (10S)-10-methyl-9,10-dihydro-8H-imidazo[1′,2′:1,2]imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline-8-carboxylate 5-oxide (1.22 g) as a brown foam.
