A solution of 4-(2-methoxycarbonylfuran-3-yl)-3,6-dihydro-2H-pyridine-1-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (2.1 g, 6.8 mmol, 1.0 eq.) and Raney Ni (1.0 g) in MeOH (150 mL) was degassed and purged with hydrogen (3×). The mixture was hydrogenated (1 atm) for 2 days, then purged with nitrogen, filtered and washed with MeOH (50 mL). The filtrate was concentrated to yield 4-(2-methoxycarbonylfuran-3-yl)piperidine-1-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (2.0 g) as a colorless oil.
