To a stirred solution of 4′-methyl-5-nitro-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid (2-methoxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-amide (39 mmol) in 250 ml methanol was added SnCl2 (117 mmol) in one portion at room temperature. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 3 hours. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was diluted with ethyl acetate and treated with saturated NaHCO3 solution. Solids were filtered off and the filtrate was washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3, brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vaccuo to give 5-amino-4′-methyl-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid (2-methoxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-amide as a yellow oil (10.5 g, 90.3%). MS (M+H)=299.
