Dissolve methanesulfonic acid 2-(2,5-dimethoxy-phenyl)-cyclopentylmethyl ester (4.8 g, 15 mmol) in DMSO (25 ml), add sodium cyanide (12 g, 16 mmol), and heat at 100° C. over night. Cool to room temperature and quench with water and ethyl acetate. Separate layers, wash organic with water 3×, brine 2×, dry and concentrate to give the title compound (3.4 g 91%): 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 6.79-6.72 (m,3H), 3.79 (s, 3H), 3.77 (s, 3H), 3.54-3.48 (m, 1H), 2.77-2.70 (m, 1H), 2.17-2.09 (m, 1H), 1.96-1.89 (m, 4H), 1.78-1.59 (m, 3H).
