A magnetically stirred solution of alcohol 4 (500 mg, 2.23 mmol) in CHCl3 (15 mL) was treated with activated MnO2 (1.94 g, 22.3 mmol) and the resulting mixture heated at reflux under a nitrogen atmosphere for 17 h. The cooled reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite™ that was then washed with CHCl3 (1×15 mL). The combined filtrates were concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound 10 (466 mg, 94%) as a white solid, m.p. 58.1-58.7° C.
