250 mg of ethyl 3-(methoxy)-5-nitro-4-(2-oxoethyl)benzoate was dissolved in 5 ml of DMF and the solution was stirred over 50 mg of 10% Pd/C (50% wet) under hydrogen atmosphere for 6 hrs. Then the mixture was purged with N2 and 126 uL of MeI and 276 mg of K2CO3 was added thereto. After stirred for 2 hrs, the mixture was diluted with Et2O, filtered through Celite. The filtrate was concentrated and purified on SiO2 column chromatography to give 184 mg of the intended compound as colorless oil.
