Procedure

To a solution of crude (R)-tert-butyl 5-nitrooxyhexanoate (31 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (50 mL) at 0° C., was added BF3.Et2O (5.1 mL, 40 mmol). After 1 hour, the mixture was then washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, and the volume of the solvent reduced. The resultant solution was used in the following step without further purification.
