A mixture of (2) (9.72 g, 31 mmol), NBS (5.56 g, 31 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (0.756 g, 3.1 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (60 ml) was refluxed for 3 hr. under a light of 500 W tungsten lamp. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was filtered and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent, ether:hexanes (1:19)) to afford 8 g (62%) of a white solid; m.p. 98-101° C.; 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.41 (6H, d, J=7.2 Hz), 2.38 (3H, s), 3.59 (1H, m), 4.47 (2H, s), 6.86 (1H, s), 6.97 (1H, s), 7.13 (1H, s).
