To a solution of (5-benzyloxy-4′-trifluoromethyl-biphenyl-3-yl)-acetic acid (2.5 g, 5.5 mmol) in EtOH (50 mL) was added 10% Pd/C (5% wt) and the resultant black suspension stirred under an atmosphere of H2 for 5 hours. The resultant mixture was filtered through celite and evaporated to dryness. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography (EtOAc:petroleum ether) to give (5-hydroxy-4′-trifluoromethyl-biphenyl-3-yl)-acetic acid ethyl ester as a white solid, yield 2.3 g (93%).
