A solution containing 5.42 g. (0.02 mole) of 1c, 4.28 g. (0.02 mole) of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, and 0.8 g. (0.02 mole) of sodium hydroxide in 50 ml. of chloroform and 15 ml. of water was refluxed for 3 hours. After cooling, the layers were separated and the organic layer was concentrated to given 5.27 g. (59%) of 1e as a white crystalline solid: UV (CH2Cl2) λmax 306 nm (31,000), ε325 =18,500.
