5 g of 1-hydroxytricyclo[4.3.1.12,5 ]undecane dissolved in 20 ml of formic acid was added dropwise with stirring to 40 ml of conc. sulfuric acid over a period of 1.5 hours while the temperature was kept at 0° to 10° C. The mixture was further stirred for 1 hour and allowed to stand. Separated solids were collected by filtration and dried to afford 5.7 g (yield: 97.5%) of tricyclo[4.3.1.12,5 ]undecane-1-carboxylic acid of the formula (1a). The data on the melting point, elemental analysis, IR, MS and 13C NMR spectra were in complete agreement with that in Example 1.
