A solution of 5.6 g. (18.4 mmol) of 2Z,4E-2-fluoro-3-methyl-5-(2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-4-methoxyphenyl)pentadien-1-ol in ether was added to a stirred suspension of 24 g. of activated manganese dioxide in ether. After 14 hours, thin layer chromatography indicated that all of the alcohol had reacted. The mixture was filtered through Celite. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel to give 5.4 g. (95% yield) of 2Z,4E-2-fluoro-3-methyl-5-(2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-4-methoxyphenyl)pentadiene-1-al.
