Procedure
A solution of 1,2,3,3a,5,6-hexahydro-N,N-dimethyl-4-oxa-10b-azafluoranthene-3a-propionamide (described in Example 8, 25 g, 0.08 mole) in a 10% potassium hydroxide solution (500 ml) is stirred at reflux for 18 hr. The solution is cooled, washed with diethyl ether, acidified and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate, evaporated and crystallized to give 1,2,3,3a,5,6-hexahydro-4-oxa-10b-azafluoranthene-3a-propionic acid (21.5 g), mp 153°-155° C.
