Procedure
A well stirred solution of 45.0 g. (0.13 mole) of carbobenzyloxyglycine 2,2,2-trichloroethyl ester in 100 ml. of glacial acetic acid is cooled to 20° and 100 ml. of 5N HBr-CH3CO2H is added. After 10 minutes, a vigorous evolution of gas occurs. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for two hours. The mixture is then diluted with dry ethyl ether and the precipitate is filtered. The product is crystallized from acetonitrile to give aminoacetic acid 2,2,2-trichloroethyl ester, hydrobromide as white crystals; m.p. 238°-240° (d); 29.5 g. (78.9%).
