Procedure
A solution of 121 g (0.51 mole) of 3-(3-bromopropyl)indene (prepared as in Example 7) and 68 g (0.74 mole) of γ-picoline in 150 ml of acetonitrile is heated at reflux temperature overnight. A small amount of ether is added and the mixture let stand at room temperature for 3 hours, and then filtered. The solid collected is washed with ether and dried in vacuo to give 138 g (0.419 mole) of tan solid, mp 93°-123°.
