1.65 g of 6-methoxy-2-[[(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridinyl)methyl]sulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole sodium salt was dissolved in 30 mL of water. To the stirring solution was added 0.47 g of magnesium chloride dissolved in 20 mL of water. Immediately upon the addition of the magnesium chloride solution a white powder precipitated. The suspension was allowed to stir for 5 minutes, and then the product was isolated by vacuum filtration. The solids were then placed into a vacuum desiccator overnight to give the desired product as a white powder. A small portion of the powder was dissolved in methanol at about 75 mg/mL, filtered and diluted with a equal volume of water. This solution was partially covered and set aside to slowly evaporate. After approximately 5 days, crystals were isolated, analyzed by single crystal x-ray diffraction and shown to be the desired product.
