Procedure
A slurry of 3-(1-hydroxymethyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-4-(1-methyl-6-nitro-1H-indol-3-yl)-pyrrole-2,5-dione (120 mg, 0.288 mmol) (prepared as described in U.S. Ser. No. 09/268,887 (Compound II)) in 3 mL of acetic anhydride (Aldrich) was stirred at room temperature for 19 hours, and at 100° C. for 2.5 hours. The resulting solution was cooled, diluted with water, and extracted with EtOAc. The EtOAc layer was washed with water, brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography using EtOAc/hexanes to give 77.1 mg of acetic acid 3-[4-(1-methyl-6-nitro-1H-indol-3-yl)-2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-3yl]-indol-1-ylmethyl ester. (Yield 53%).
