Procedure

Chromium(VI) oxide (CrO3, 2.828 g, 28.28 mmol) was added to a solution of pyridine (4.58 mL, 56.63 mmol) in dichloromethane (70 mL) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes. To the resulting burgundy-colored solution was added a solution of ethyl 3-trifluoromethyl-4-[(4-chloro-2-nitro-phenyl)(hydroxy)methyl]-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate (1.64 g, 4.17 mmol) in dichloromethane (15 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 days. The dichloromethane solution was decanted from the dark viscous residue, which was washed with diethyl ether (3×100 mL). The dichloromethane and diethyl ether extracts were combined, washed successively with 1 N aqueous hydrochloric acid (2×100 mL) and saturated aqueous sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated by rotary evaporation to afford 1.33 g (82%) of the title compound as a yellow solid.
