Procedure

A mixture of α-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-pyridinemethanol (0.364mol) and N-phenyl acetamide (0.364 mol) in HOAc (360 ml) and H2SO4 36N (38.6 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 6 days. The solvent was evaporated, yielding 122.6 g (±)-N-[4-[(4-chloro-phenyl)(3-pyridinyl)methyl]phenyl]acetamide (compound 673).
