To a solution of 2,4-di-t-butylphenol (Aldrich, 2.0 g, 9.7 mmol) in 2 ml of HOAC was added Br2 (0.5 ml, 9.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane 1/20) to yield the desired product (2.54 g) as a white solid.
