Procedure
A solution of 2-[3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-propionylamino]-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (prepared in Example 39(B)(b), 135 mg, 0.32 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) was treated with a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 68 h. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography (Merck Silica gel 60, 230-400 mesh, 50/50 hexanes/ethyl acetate) afforded 2-[3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-propionylamino]-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (71.4 mg, 54.8%) as a pale yellow solid: EI-HRMS m/e calcd for C19H21N3O5S (M) 403.1201, found 403.1188.
