A mixture of 1-ethyl-6,7,8-trifluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (0.43 g), 4-dimethylaminopiperidine (2.1 g), and pyridine (3 ml) was refluxed for 6 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness. The residue was treated with water and extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with water, dried, and evaporated. The solid was recrystallized from ethyl acetate and gave 1-ethyl-6,8-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-7-(4-dimethylamino-1-piperidinyl)-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (0.22 g), mp 210°-211° C.
