Procedure

176 g (1 mole) of p-cyclohexylphenol, 42.2 g (1.13 moles) of 80% paraformaldehyde, and 3.0 g of oxalic acid were dissolved in 300 ml of benzene, and reacted at the boiling point of benzene for 12 hours to give a reaction intermediate consuming 92% of the formaldehyde used. To the reaction intermediate were added 57 g (0.25 mole) of 4,4'-isopropylidene-biphenol and 23.5 g (0.25 mole) of phenol, and the reaction was continued for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was heated to 160° C. to remove water and the solvent, and thereby to give a p-cyclohexlphenol/bisphenol A/phenol/formaldehyde co-condensate.
