Procedure
A mixture of 26 parts of 7,15,16,17-tetrahydro-3-methoxy-17,17-dimethyl-6H-cyclopenta[ a]phenanthrene (Bull. soc. chim. France, 1968, 4886) and 150 parts of freshly-fused pyridine hydrochloride is heated in an atmosphere of nirogen at 220° for 1 1/2 hours. The reaction mixture is then poured into 200 parts of water, whereupon insoluble solids are filtered out, washed with water, dried in air, and crystallized from a mixture of ether and hexane to give 7,15,16,17-tetrahydro-17,17-dimethyl-6H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-3-ol melting at approximately 152°-153°, and having the formula ##STR6##
