In a manner similar to that of Step C of Example 1, condensation of 1-hydrazino-6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (7.2 g.) with acetaldehyde (4.3 g.) and treatment of the resulting product with sulfuric acid afforded 1-(2-ethylidenehydrazino)-6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (I: X=CH3, X' =Y=Y' =H, Z=Z' =CH3O) sulfate monohydrate (5.3 g., m.p. 165°-168° C.).
