Procedure
A solution of 4-benzyl-2-toluene-p-sulphonyloxymethylmorpholine (18.75 g.) in glacial acetic acid (50 ml.) is shaken in an atmosphere of hydrogen with palladium on carbon catalyst (0.5 g.; 5%) until no more hydrogen is absorbed (ca. 1.1 1.). The catalyst is then removed by filtration and the filtrate is evaporated under reduced pressure to give a colourless syrup which, on addition of ethanol, solidifies. Crystallisation from ethanol gives 2-toluene-p-sulphonyloxymethylmorpholine acetate, m.p. 140°-142° C.
