Procedure

The reaction of a 1:9 mixture of the methyl and ethyl esters of 2-(N-ethyl-acetamido)-4-methyl-cyclohex-1-ene-1-carboxylate (36.3 g; 0.144 mole) with dry sodium methoxide in dioxan as described in Example 8 gave the title product as a white crystalline solid; m.p. (EtOH) 335° - 338° C.
