2-(4-Phenylhydroxymethyl-3-methylbenzyloxy)tetrahydropyran (2.5 g, 8 millimol) was dissolved in ethanol (20 ml). 5%-palladium carbon was added at a catalytic amount, and stirred at room temperature under hydrogen atmosphere for 6 days. After the insoluble material was distilled away, the filtrate was concentrated, and the residue was separated and purified by using a silica-gel column chromatography (ethyl acetatee:n-hexane=1:3) to give the title compound (1.65 g, 5.6 millimol).
