Reaction Steps
3-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)propionic acid (52.36 g,0.223 mol) is added portion-wise to a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide (70.98 g, 0.490 mol) in methanesulfonic acid (Eaton's reagent) under nitrogen. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 4 hours, poured into water and filtered to obtain a solid. The solid is washed with water and dried in a vacuum oven to give the title product as an off-white solid (45.88 g, mp 86°-87° C.).
