Reaction Steps

A mixture of 50 g of 6,6-dimethylcyclohexadienone and 50 g of 3-butyn-1-ol in 300 ml of benzene is placed in an autoclave and heated to 200°-210° C. for 3 hours. The autoclave is then cooled to room temperature and the reaction mixture is removed, the solvent stripped and the residue distilled under vacuum through a 3 inch microvigreaux column yielding 65 g of 3,3-dimethyl-6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-bicyclo(2.2.2)-octa-5,7-dien-2-one having the structure: ##STR31##
