Procedure

45 g. of 1-[2-(2-piperidyl)-ethyl]indane prepared as described above is mixed with 100 ml. of 37% formalin and 200 ml. of 98% formic acid is added while swirling and the solution is then heated overnight on a steam bath. The reaction mixture is worked up by concentrating in vacuo, dissolving in water, filtering, basification and extraction with ether. The ether extracts are dried over potassium hydroxide and after removal of the ether, the product is distilled collecting 42.6 g. (88%), N-methyl-1-[2-(2-piperidyl)ethyl]indane, boiling point 128°-130° C/0.2 mm.
