A warm solution of 1 g of 3-[(acetyloxy)methyl]-7-[[2-[4-(chloromethyl)phenyl]acetyl]amino]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]-oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid and 2 g. of sodium azide in 80 ml of methanol was refluxed for 4 hours after which the solvent was removed under high vacuum at room temperature. The residue was triturated with 80 ml of benzeneacetone (2:1) to give 3-[(Acetyloxy)methyl]-7-[[2-[4-(azidomethyl)phenyl]acetyl]amino]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2carboxylic acid. M.P. 135°-136° C.
