Procedure

The product from Example 48A (1.2 g, 4.9 mmol) and sodium methoxide (1.0 g, 19 mmol) were refluxed in 30 mL MeOH for 6 h. The reaction was partitioned between water and CH2Cl2. The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated. Silica gel chromatography (CH2Cl2) yielded 1.1 g (78%) of the title compound: 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 3.79 (s, 3H), 4.05 (s, 3H), 6.96 (bs, 2H), 7.47 (d, J=6 Hz, 1H), 8.07 (d, J=6 Hz, 1H); MS (DCI(NH3)) m/e 239 (M+H)+.
