Reaction Steps

1-Phenylpiperidin-4-one (2.0 g, 11.4 mmol) (from Example 123) and benzylamine (1.33 g, 12.5 mmol) were dissolved in 1,2-dichloroethane (35 mL) and acetic acid (1.36 g, 22.6 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred for 2 hrs at room temperature, then cooled to 0° C. (ice-water) and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (3.14 g, 14.8 mmol) was added, then the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hrs. Sat. NaHCO3 (aq) (30 mL) was added, and the organic layer was extracted. The aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (2×50 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with hexane--30% ethyl acetate to give the product as a white solid.
