Procedure
A solution of (5) (1 g) in dry methanol (50 ml) was treated with a catalytic amount of sodium methoxide at room temperature for 24 h. T.l.c. (chloroform-methanol, 6:1) showed one product. The solution was deionised by shaking with Amberlyst--15 resin (Trade Mark) and concentrated to give (6) (0.57 g, 90%) as a syrup [α]D +59.9 (c 1.05, water).
