3-nitro cinnamylidene malonic acid was prepared by reacting 3-nitro cinnamaldehyde (13.7 g) with malonic acid (8.05 g 0.077 mol.) in glacial acetic acid (20 ml) at 100° C. for 6 hrs. After cooling, the product was collected, washed and dried to yield 8.9 g. of the desired product m.p 185°-187° C.
