A solution of 1α-hydroxycholesteryl tosylate (7, R' is 4-methylphenyl, 1.35 g) in anhydrous ether (80 ml) was heated under reflux with lithium aluminum hydride (0.098 g, 23.9 mmoles) under anhydrous conditions for 5 hours. Work-up of the reaction mixture as described in the above procedure for the preparation of 4,6-cholestadien-1α,3β-diol 4 followed by chromategraphy of the crude carbinol on silica gel (25 g) using low boiling petroleum ether-benzene as the eluent gave 705 mg (72% yield based on 1α-hydroxycholesterol 6) of 5.
