A solution of boron tribromide (60 ml, 60.00 mmol) in 20 ml of dichloromethane is added to a cold (0-5° C.) solution of 4-[N-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-N-(4 methoxyphenyl)amino]methylbenzonitrile (4.60 g, 15.11 mmol). After 1 h at room temperature the mixture was hydrolysed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3, filtered, washed with water (50 ml) and with dichloromethane (20 ml) to give a brown solid (4.00 g). Crystallization from acetone yielded a brown solid (3.00 g, 68%) mp: 150° C.
