Bromine (1.4 g, 8.8 mmol) is added dropwise with stirring to a solution of 2-benzyloxy-acetophenone (2.0 g, 8.8 mmol) in dry ether (30 ml) at room temperature. After stirring for additional 2 h the solution is washed with water and dried over sodium sulfate. Evaporation of the filtered solution yields the title compound. 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): 7.83-7.81 (m, 1H); 7.49-7.38 (m, 6H); 7.06-7.00 (m, 2H); 5.18 (s, 2H), 4.52 (s, 3H).
