To a solution of L-tyrosine (45.3 g, 0.25 mol) in CH3OH (680 mL), SOCl2 (44.6 g, 0.375 mol) was added dropwise at 0° C. After addition, the mixture was allowed to warm to rt and then refluxed for overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated to give L-tyrosine methyl ester (49.2 g, 100%), which was used in the next step without purification.
