Procedure

To a stirred solution of the product from Example 12B (232 mg, 2.0 mmol) in ethanol (4 mL) was added 4,4-dimethyl-3-oxopentanenitrile (250 mg, 2.0 mmol). The mixture was refluxed for 2 hours. The ethanol was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure and the crude product was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (10 mL), which was used directly for the next step.
