A mixture of 2-ethoxy-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid (0.20 g, 0.84 mmol) and SOCl2 (5 mL) was warmed to 90° C. for 2 hours and then was cooled to ambient temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude material was diluted with 10 mL toluene and was concentrated again. This dilution/concentration was repeated two additional times to provide 2-ethoxy-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzoyl chloride that was used directly below.
