A solution of cis-1-(2,2,2-trifluoroacetyl)-2,3,4,4a,9,9a-hexahydro-1H-indeno[2,1-b]pyridine-6-carbonitrile (5.50 g) and 4 M NaOH solution (5.6 mL) in methanol (30 mL) is stirred at room temperature for 2 h. Brine (150 mL) is then added and the resulting mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate (3×75 mL). The combined extract is dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give the title compound as an oil that solidified upon standing. Yield: 3.70 g (quantitative); Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=295 [M+H]+.
